How GST works in New Zealand

The single GST rate in New Zealand is 15%. Only businesses registered for GST are charging GST on their tax invoices. Learn more below.

GST and GST registration

When starting a new business, you will not be registered for GST by default. You will need to get an NZBN and add it to every invoice.  If you register for GST, you will start generating and sending tax invoices. Only GST registered businesses will include the title 'Tax Invoice' on their invoices.

The difference is that a tax invoice will include GST details. As the business.govt.nz website states, whether you are a sole trader, contractor, in partnership or a company, as soon as you think you’ll earn more than $60,000 in 12 months, you must register for GST. You may be charged penalties if you don't register when you need to.

The GST registration process is straightforward and is handled online through myIRYou will need:

  • Your IRD number

  • Your business industry classification (BIC) code

  • Select a taxable period — either monthly, bi-monthly or six-monthly for small businesses

  • Choose an accounting basis — sole traders and small businesses may like to consider a payment basis, because you won't have to make a GST payment before you've received money from your customers

GST RETURNS - CALCULATING AND PAYING GST

Every NZ business needs to lodge an annual tax return, stating all your income and expenses for the previous tax year. A tax year starts on 01 April and finishes on 31 March  next year.

If you register for GST, whether it is a voluntary or mandatory registration, you will be required to lodge your GST Returns - monthly, bi-monthly or six-monthly.

The GST return can be lodged via the myIR portal. Once you submit your return, you can go back and fix mistakes. It's your responsibility to send the GST return by the due date. If you cannot complete your return on time we may charge you a late filing penalty.

To complete your GST return you'll need to know, for the taxable period and have these key inputs for your GST return at hand. You can get them from Billdu in a couple of clicks:

  • Total sales and income (from your tax invoices)

  • Total purchases and expenses

  • Adjustments from your calculation sheet.
